Julie H. McFarlane Lifetime Achievement Award

2018 Recipient Doug Killian

Award Presentation to Doug Killian
Friday, April 20 • 5:00 p.m. • Agate Beach Inn, Newport

Doug Killian has practiced juvenile law for 20 years, most of that time at the Metropolitan Public Defender, Inc. He is a smart, tenacious, and fearless advocate, all the while possessing genuine humility. Doug is not afraid to take unpopular opinions, and seems to relish the role of spokesperson for the underdog. He is not afraid to challenge those in authority; for example, he once noted the court’s unfriendly demeanor for the record.

Doug strives for excellence at every turn. Anyone who has ever carried the heavy caseload of court-appointed work understands what this means — holding yourself to an impossible standard, every day. Doug’s advocacy has true meaning for his clients and for all of us in the field; his careful attention to preserving the record for appeal has produced results with a real impact on juvenile law in our state. Doug’s work has resulted in favorable definitive delinquency and dependency rulings other practitioners frequently cite.

Doug works hard for every client regardless of how challenging the person or how hopeless the cause. He inspires those around him to do the same.
